Truly a relief that the club has managed to secure a bridging loan – let’s just hope that we don’t have to draw down too much of it as the interest rate is bound to be punitive.

As this is the final piece in the ground funding jigsaw, the club now needs to shift it’s focus to the debenture issue. Glyn needs to be given a budget that will keep us in the division and to do this there needs to be a strong take up in seat debentures.

It is vital that we get through next season avoiding the drop, and we can give ourselves a huge leg up by providing Glyn with some extra funds. If we can survive next season and get back to a world where the ground is generating revenue then the future is bright for the club.

Interesting interview with Nick Daws on the club website. He says that they are hopeful of getting a couple of players in before the start of the season, but looking at the squad we have signed up so far it is threadbare to say the least!

Eighteen players on contract, but 6 of these are 18 year olds (Matthew Cox, the keeper, is only 17 I believe). Out of the youngsters only Rudoni can be considered a full squad member IMO, the others really need to get some experience on loan before being thrown in to League football.

Glyn has previously stated that we will be taking advantage of the 5 loans open to us and to have a realistic chance of survival these loans need to add talent and experience to the squad. The club have a reasonable record with loanees over the last couple of seasons and we will need to be just as good next season. The trouble is, with the dire financial predicament of many lower league clubs the competition for quality loan players will be fierce as they are cheaper than permanent signings.

Looking at the squad on paper the only area where we look to have a good starting point is in defence. We are well covered at full back/wing back and at centre back we probably only need cover for injury/suspension.

We need an experienced keeper behind this defence. Nik Tzanev did well at Conference level last season, but he remains inexperienced. Matthew Cox is only 17 and needs to be playing non-league football to gain experience.

Midfield and attack are the big areas of concern for me.

In midfield only Reilly has any experience. Jack Rudoni shows great promise, but needs to be nurtured to maintain his confidence. Hartigan has experience, but his performances last season demonstrate to me the perils of playing a youngster too much too early – his youthful confidence was replaced with the fear of making a mistake and it ruined his game. We desperately need to replace the experience and leadership of Wordsworth and Wagstaff…

Up front we are looking equally threadbare. Pigs manfully leads the line, but he will only ever be a 10-15 goal striker. Roscrow is unproven and is unlikely to be prolific, and the talented 18 year old Zack Robinson, needs to gain experience at Conference level on loan. Thus, we need a goalscoring striker – someone to take the pressure off Pigott. We also need a fourth striker, who can be a threat off the bench and press for a starting berth.

In my assessment we need 5 loanees and 2-3 permanent signings before the season starts. The squad as it stands is missing experience all over the park, midfield control and goals up front. The loanees will be key once again. Although unlikely, I’d love to see the return of Trott/Day, Forss and Sanders. As far as permanent signings are concerned, a Bulman-esque midfield general should be top of Glyn’s shopping list.

Let’s hope the debenture information is released soon and let’s hope that the take up is huge, as Glyn will need as much money as possible to put together a competitive squad.

    Interesting rumours.

Alexander left Aldershot for Barnet, supposedly because he wanted to be closer to his home in Essex. Perhaps Galliard are throwing in a few apartments on the Plough Lane development for us to use to house players..! ;o)

I remember NA at a Meet the Manager evening telling us how we didn’t bother trying to get Chelsea players in on loan due to the restrictions that were imposed by the parent club. It will be interesting to see whether this policy has changed.

…and in other transfer news, a certain Lyle Taylor has signed for newly relegated Millwall for a reported £80k a week and on a four year contract.

How can we compete with deals like that?
