ParticipantApologies for the test messages, which I now cannot edit for some reason… :o(
We have all been searching for the reasons for yesterday’s capitulation and FWIW I feel it comes down to two issues:
1. Confidence – I feel that the players as well as the rest of the club were hit by the Sutton performances. Missing out on a televised match against Leeds ‘B’ and the prospect of much gold if we had continued in the cup, I believe had an effect. We limped to a draw against a poor Chesterfield side and the favourites for the title were just a step too far. The confidence in the squad needs to be built in this week’s training sessions.
2. The First Few Minutes – Lack of confidence or not, if we had got off to a solid start and begun to implement our tactical plan for the Blades, then we could have grown into the game. However, the schoolboy error from James Shea inside a minute would have given both the players and fans a massive sinking feeling – something we are not in a position to handle at the moment. Add to that the release of pressure on the home side, enabling them to play with confidence and we were almost doomed from the start. We need to set aside yesterday’s display and concentrate on the next two fixtures at Kingsmeadow. Saturday and the first visit of Karl Robinscum will ensure a lively atmosphere and I will be more than happy with a point. Tuesday for me is the important fixture against a down and out, crisis-riven Sky Blues. Three points are important from this – let’s hope the match is abandoned after persistent crowd invasions and we are awarded a 3-0 victory by the league! ;o)

ParticipantI don’t think the Dons thought they would win and that has got to affect the way you play. Certainly after the Shea fiasco the result was never in doubt. It worries me how little the team offered going forward. Nothing would be about right. Elliot did nothing apart from to try and hold the ball up. Taylor given a more forward role in the second half got nothing. Barcham was anonymous, as was Poleon on his brief appearance. The defence looked slow and old and the full backs out of their depth. Sheffield played well but only because we let them. We need to move on. I thought we would get beat but hoped we would play better than that. Our lack of away goals is becoming a major problem. We need to break that drought if we aren’t to slip further down the league. Our home form must hold up and then we should finish safely in mid table. Usually Ardley is very effective in the transfer windows but after one display the jury is out on Tom Soares. On that one display it didn’t seem he is going to add much to our team. Is Will Nightingale due a run in the team – we need some youth and pace. For the first time for a while I’m looking down rather than up!It could all look so different in 2 weeks after 2 home wins!

ParticipantAn important couple of home games ahead. Charlton and their hated manager tomorrow, followed by Coventry and their disgruntled fans and disinterested players on Tuesday. We need to regain our mojo after a bad few weeks and get to safety as quickly as possible.
Two points must be a minimum from these two games, 3 would be acceptable and 4 desirable.
A good idea by the management to send Tom Beere on loan for a month. Hopefully he will get some regular game time at Gateshead and return when we are safe to get some game time with us before the end of the season.
