After another promising but unrewarded effort on Tuesday, the boys face three games in the next week against the teams currently occupying the bottom 3 places in the fledgling league table. This is a double-edged sword – we are playing teams who have not started well and so we should be confident of picking up points, however, if we fail against these sides then we could be in the bottom 4 for our debut at NPL. Our recent record again struggling teams is woeful.

We also don’t have the greatest of records against any of these teams – the Pirelli stadium especially (W0 D2 L4), has been a graveyard for our hopes on several occasions in the recent past.

However, Burton are in transition with the departure of their talismanic manager Nigel Clough and so this may be a good time to visit.

The squad appears to have a clean bill of health, with Ollie Palmer finally ready to enter the fray. He is needed, as despite his enthusiasm Adam Roscrow is simply not up to league standard and we have lost impetus whenever Longman has tired after 60-70 minutes in games. I expect Palmer to be on the bench and to be given 15-20 minutes tomorrow.

Chislett is also ready to go (let’s hope he learns to avoid the Pig’s goal bound efforts in the future!) and so Glyn will need to decided how he wants his midfield 3 to look. Woodyard and Oksanen seem to be forming a solid relationship in front of the 3 CBs and so the decision may be which of Rudoni, Reilly or Chislett suits the Gaffer’s tactical plan for the game.

Hopefully, the last couple of days have been spent defending set pieces and improving the quality into the box. If we can sharpen up both of these areas then we are perfectly capable of picking up our first 3 point haul from the Pirelli stadium.

The return to Plough Lane is getting closer… this will put you in the mood… ‘General’ Lee Willett tells us what it means for Dons fans… stirring stuff (as you would expect)

In the wider context of our club’s history, the score line of yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Doncaster doesn’t matter. But the fact that the game took place at all was massive. Back in January (just nine short months ago) I sat at the Dons Trust EGM and wondered if we’d even get another home game. Once again funding was the issue, yet somehow we got over the line. Just how this incredible club’s fanbase seems to tackle each and every obstacle put in their way, is testament to this club’s audacity to survive no matter what.

Last night I was a blubbering wreck on a couple of occasions. I was coping OK until the pre-match “We are back. We are home. We are Wimbledon” video compilation. What a positive message, and one that resonates throughout the football world that we’re a club that doesn’t just lay down and die. We don’t accept the FA Commission’s ruling, so what better way to stick two fingers back to point out the real Wimbledon football club.

As I said, what happened on the pitch was largely irrelevant. It was fitting to see Will Nightingale leading the team out, and you’d have bet your shirt on the Pig scoring the first goal. Doncaster should have won the game, but somehow we managed to score two good goals only our kind defence to allow a close game. It would have been the perfect ending to a dream day if we’d have held on for a win, but what was important was the occasion itself.

Now we can look forward to a vaccine being found, sports events being allowed to feature spectators, and a packed Plough Lane to cheer the Dons on. It’s been almost 30 years since I was last watched a Dons game there, so waiting a few more months won’t bother me much. When we can all do the same, I’m sure it will be another emotional day. Until then…
