So let’s get this straight. A player agrees terms and comes to Kingsmeadow to complete the formalities. Halfway through the medical he asked to bend over whilst a huge rectal thermometer is produced. “Bugger that” said player and went off to the delights that is Southend.

Joking apart, this really beggars belief. If this is the way players can behave, the transfer system is broken. It’s deceitful, disrespectful, and downright rude. It’s just a shame we aren’t playing Southend before the end of the season, as it would add a bit of spice to proceedings.

Shocking performance at Bury. From the players and the manager. The players will disappointed with how they performed but the set up was wrong. 3 at the back with Meades right midfield??? That soon became a flat back 4 with Deji at right back- looking out of position. Then off goes Robbo after a yellow card and on comes Francomb and finally the back 4 looks half decent but we’re losing by then. Plenty of huff and puff in the second half but no real chances that you felt deserved a goal. I didn’t feel like clapping them off. Especially as I had witnessed a similarly disappointing performance at Rotherham on Saturday. Before that everyone was saying we were in good form and Ardley up for manager of the month. Well that good form has gone out of the window and the relegation battle continues. I was optimistic but now…..

It is puzzling how our run of good form has abruptly ended. Are we seriously heading towards the scenario where the four teams below us have to knock us off our lowly perch to ensure survival, and one being our friends in the South Midlands? It is going to make for a tense end to the season. I still think that Ardley is the right person for the job and that he is having to work with less than the best, but unless we start to not throw 3 goals away at home, then the omens do not look good for him. I wonder if there is a sense of panic at the club? The players never seem to respond well when the Gaffer gets stressed. COYD.

I shuddered when I saw the 1-3 result at home to fellow relegation strugglers Northampton Town. That’s back-to-back defeats (and bad ones) to those teams we have to take points off and not donate to. It’s a bad time to suddenly lose form after the optimism of January. I wrote in the latest Wombles Downunder that it wouldn’t take much for edgy fans to fire up and long established fans (from what I can see) are doing just that. Make no mistake Neal Ardley is on shaky ground. Other gaffers in this league have not been as lucky to have a supportive Board as AFC Wimbledon have shown to Ardley, even promotion-chasing Bradford City turfed out Stuart McCall last week. It has been far from a satisfying season and Ardley’s inability to bring in a much-needed target man (for whatever reason) during the January transfer window has only complicated the situation. I think we should prepare for a very tense closing few months. Of course, there is still time to turn things around, but these latest results are shaking the confidence.

I think the Rotherham game was the turning point. We went into it in good form but virtually everybody at the club expected us to lose! That cannot be good for confidence…….. And so we lose to Bury and Northampton and probably Plymouth. You can’t beat a positive mindset and now we seem to have lost it. Survival is still in our hands.
