Wonderful to bump in to Liam at Boreham Wood to watch today’s friendly together. All the more jealous now of his wonderful Plough Lane news! We had a great afternoon together. As for the game, it was very much a pre season friendly! But it was great to see Mitch Pinnock put in another MOTM (for me) performance on the left wing: an assured display of pace, trickery, strength and sizzling crosses. Kalambayi had a rock solid and impressive game next to Deji at centre back: he’s huge now! Watson was great at right back, tough defensively but with attacking flair. Wagstaff was again excellent. Lots of reason for optimism. The only disappointment was Appiah who looked the opposite of sharp.
BTW, John, I believe congratulations are in order after your recent nuptials ☺️
Many thanks, Liam. :o)
Really sad to hear the news about Meadsey retiring. Always gave 100% and always spoke eloquently about the game and himself, all too rare in modern times.
Thanks Meadsey, and don’t be a stranger at KM and NPL…
Well that was a thoroughly enjoyable away day up north – a great win in glorious sunshine. It was a superb team performance, with confident and solid displays by every single player. There was a real togetherness and energy which was utterly refreshing and engaging. We looked a very different Wimbledon to the one of last season – a much, much better and more assured team. Soares and Trotter are different players, more lean and mobile, and rock solid in midfield. My new favourite Pinnock played well again, though he didn’t look as comfortable playing out on the right all game. He’s better on the left. King was a safe pair of hands and made one outstanding save. Oshilaja and Nightingale were rocks too (though Will did have a nervy first half hour). Pigott was good up front, Appiah had a few decent efforts, Barcham worked tirelessly. Hanson and Wagstaff were great reinforcements to bring in and also performed really well. But for me the stand out players were our new young left and right backs. Both were virtually unbeatable, tough tackling and distributing intelligently out of defence. Purrington at left back was my MOTM, outstanding against Fleetwood’s best player, their fast and tricky Wes Burns. It’s sad Jon Neades had to leave, but in Purrington we have actually stepped up our defensive quality. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day watching a great Wimbledon team in winning action. It bodes well for the season!
Well that was a good start to the season with everyone in the side playing for each other. A very good team performance. Looking forward to the season now,I know one swallow doesn’t make a summer but it looked good. Watching it on ifollow which was a hundred percent better than last year and with commertry as well, which broke up a few times but I’m happy with that.COYD.☺
Phew! Only 16 more wins to safety….
