October 13, 2016 at 12:09 am #13041Devon WombleParticipantThoroughly enjoyed the latest WDSA Newsletter. One of the best editions in my humble opinion.
You know, regarding our team’s performances lately I think we have been a little lucky… and I’m not talking about whether it was a foul or penalty or not (it wasn’t), I’m talking about our goalmouth scrambles, which still frighten the hell out of me.
I think the observation that Robinson and Fuller are only now just getting up steam is correct but it is Charles that frustrates me. His header from the corner that resulted in a goal Saturday was absolute measured class, yet his misjudged clearance that resulted in an OG was annoying, especially as he must have seen Shea covering it already. I’m wondering if his role should really be more like an old fashioned ‘sweeper’ in front of the back four but with some free range. Truthfully I can’t wait to see how Robertson performs by comparison.
Elsewhere, LTB is still out of sorts… (witness his half-hearted half-forgotten handshake with NA when he came off, while Elliot got a hero’s welcome); and Bulman continues to amaze me…. he could still be here a couple of seasons from now. I hope so, even if it is as a cameo ‘super-sub’.
As for NA, well, it’s going right for him at the moment, but I still can’t help but get angry when he subs so late, or fails to play the 4-3-3 which we are so much better at than 4-4-2! C’est la vie.
So… looking forward to our first game at NPL… Liverpool in the Premier league…. it is feasible you know!October 15, 2016 at 8:32 pm #13049Windlesham DonParticipantBack on the forum after a three match absence (technical issues, not an Onyadon red card!) and three wins have changed the atmosphere around the club.
After both myself and Singapore predicting a trouncing from the Gills, our comfortable 2-0 victory should have been foreseen. In truth we got some good fortune, with playmaker Bradley Dack limping off after 15 minutes, some shocking defending and a general lacklustre display from the men from Kent. However, our own solid display was a morale boost for the squad.
Less discussed, but almost as important was the Checkatrade match against Wembley victims Plymouth. The Pilgrims were out for revenge and came out all guns blazing. To concede a goal early but to come back to comprehensively outplay the team which are clear at the top of League 2, was an excellent performance which deserved more praise than it received. All squad members put in an excellent shift and the starting XI know that their places are under pressure.
Hopefully most of you got to see Sunday, a rumbustious and entertaining TV game – stick that in your tippy tappy Premier League pipe and smoke it! Another great performance from the boys and created a mini piece of history for the club when the League table was updated.
October 15, 2016 at 8:48 pm #13050Windlesham DonParticipant…And so to today and another important match against strugglers Swindon. I remember at the pre-season Meet the Manager evening NA was asked who he thought would struggle this season. The only club he mentioned specifically was Swindon and after a reasonable start they have stuttered in the last month.
We need to beat the teams towards the bottom of the table, but disappointingly we have failed to do this against both Shrewsbury and Coventry. Hopefully the new found confidence in the squad and supporters will carry us to three points and a further buffer to the relegation zone.
What we can say about League 1 is that it is competitive and all matches are difficult. Despite currently sitting pretty at the heady heights of 10th position, it will not take much (a couple of injuries, a couple of defensive mistakes, a couple of refereeing gaffes) to see our current confidence ebb away. We need to pick up points when we are confident and playing well.
As for the team, NA’s hand may be forced by the injury problems on the right side of midfield. With Francomb, Whelpdale and Beere all missing, NA may be persuaded to retain the 4-3-3 formation from Oxford. It will be interesting to see if Poleon is once again on the bench, as it is difficult to play him from the start in this formation.
Whatever formation NA chooses, I am hopeful of another three points, although I doubt it will be straightforward – a difficult 2-1 victory for me.
COYD!!
October 16, 2016 at 12:16 am #13051liamwimboParticipantThere is a good feeling around the club at the moment and not just because we are higher than the scum.
Hopefully that will translate into 3 points tonight. -
