Good question Devon Womble. My understanding is that each manager marks the official’s performance. Over time these are monitored, and persistent poor performers are ranked further down the football refereeing pyramid. Trouble is, there aren’t really enough volunteers. So we end up in the situation we have.
Devon – In addition to marks from both managers I understand that there should be an independent assessor at each match. If an official consistently receives poor marks then he/she can be ‘relegated’ to a lower level league. The problem of course arises when all referees in a league are equally poor!!
Thanks for the responses Windlesham / Colum.
I’m now wondering if the ref from last night was promoted from league two (in a ‘whistle-off’ perhaps?) and is now bottom of league one…
We might improve… but I doubt he ever could.
Who would want to be a football referee! The problem is that the end-of-match reports from losing Gaffers would all be the same: “rubbish, worst ref in history, that wisnae a penalty…” By the time the junior secretary in the Department of Waster Paper had sorted them out, then I’m sure they would be of no relevance. After all, our Gaffer has not always been the most realistic of post-match assessors in his time. Now, we averaged a conclusion that 14th is where we ought to end up, so we are only 3 points adrift of that, and 4 points adrift of an over-achieving season. Us Wombles like to be in our burrows, but the deepest and darkest recesses of the league are not for us. We came up too soon and we miss the impact that Bayo used to give us at the start of seasons (before he then disappeared for games on end). 2 games down and eight until we make our assessment n’est-ce pas. Let’s keep the faith and look at the table upside-down and rejoice!
Well done Singapore, Windlesham and Colum for your thorough match analyses, just what’s required and please keep it coming.
Mac – could be an interesting season ahead and …. no pressure on the games count down to the first all-revealing 10!!!
Devon – please don’t change (LOL)
