So next up is Shrewsbury at KM and in my view an important match for us. Four home league games to date have produced three defeats and one victory. However, as the league table starts to take shape it looks as though our defeats have all been at the hands of clubs who will be challenging at the top of the table come the end of the season. The…[Read more]

Thanks for the summary guys, especially Singapore Don for a great insight! I boarded a plane in Greece when we were 1-0 down at HT and resigned to defeat, and arrived at Heathrow to receive 9 text messages with the good news!
It looks like George Francomb has sustained a nasty injury and maybe there is a chance for NA to incorporate Parrett into…[Read more]

Looking forward to a week in the sun in Greece, but having booked it before the fixtures were published I am gutted that I will be missing my most anticipated home AND away fixtures. Bl**dy fixture computer!!
Neal has some important decisions to make – Taylor or Poleon? Barnett or Elliott? How does he get Parrett into the starting XI?
For me,…[Read more]

The brutal fact is that if your team is struggling then the fans will be looking for a scapegoat. So far we have struggled to adapt to the higher standard of League 1, and Ryan has made a couple of high profile mistakes (aren’t all keeper errors high profile though?) Add to this the fact that he is the only new player in the defence (Kelly was…[Read more]

After a first league win of the season I should be really happy, but strangely I am feeling frustrated with yesterday’s performance.
Firstly, it was good to finally meet Singapore Don, let’s hope we have a chance to meet and chat at many more games! It was also great to see the ‘lucky’ WDSA flag above the Chemflow terrace. Sadly Liam, I am on…[Read more]

Likewise Liam, Singapore, I will be in the middle bar or outside (whether permitting from around 14:00). I’m a mid-50s scrawny mess and I’ll be wearing my ‘lucky’ green away top! I’ll also be with a similar aged ‘portly’ guy who is my guest for the day. I’ll keep an eye out for an Aussie carrying a big flag and a guy in a blue and yellow wig!…[Read more]

Deadline day is upon us and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we did not get our signing over the line. NA was definitely downbeat in his Lyle Taylor contract interview, but I wonder if it was due to a failure to get defensive cover over the line?
I am pretty cynical about Lyle’s signing. He can talk the talk alright, but we all know that the…[Read more]

I attended last night’s match, which had the atmosphere of a PSF. I don’t support the competition, but I felt that after our start to the season the team needed some backing. I was also interested to see how the fringe players performed.
The first thing to mention is that if all Premier League youth teams are going to treat the trophy with…[Read more]

From the highlights it looks as though we were very poor at bringing the ball out of defence. Having gone to 4-5-1, presumably to stop getting overrun in midfield, we needed to pass our way out of defence as we had no long ‘out’ ball. This meant that the 5 in midfield needed to make themselves available when we regained possession, it also meant…[Read more]

Good to see some much needed perspective and informed comment from our editor, far better than the abusive bear pit that WUP turns into when things aren’t going to plan!
Undoubtedly Clarke is under pressure after some game influencing gaffes, yesterday being another which ruined what was a second solid performance on the spin. However, it does…[Read more]

I’m feeling curiously optimistic about tomorrow. The point and display at Northampton, the news on NPL, the return to fitness of Meades and Francomb and the final arrival of summer – all give positive feelings (with of course the normal background nagging dread that it will end in a 3-0 defeat!)
My concerns at the moment are twofold: firstly…[Read more]

Sadly with regard to Kelle Roos I strongly suspect that Rovers’ new Arab owner has allowed them to splash the cash to get him in. Since their change of ownership Rovers are probably another team with whom we cannot compete. I always suspected that Kelle would turn up at a small Championship or large League 1 club, but his salary was always out…[Read more]

It would be great to see a whole bunch of you guys over for the first match at NPL. It will take a bit of organising though, as knowing our construction industry the completion and opening date will probably be set in blancmange!!
Hopefully the completion date will be in the summer, with a few PSFs to iron out issues before a first competitive…[Read more]

Exciting times, Singapore, and especially so for someone who lives so close to the ground. I trust you will post some pics as the stadium takes shape! ;o)
We recently moved into a new apartment and one of the pre-requisites when selecting our new home was access to a train station, as driving to NPL would be a long haul for me.
I can’t wait for…[Read more]

Colum – They certainly managed to show every last second of interest!!
Looking at it the day after, for me the key play was Elliott missing an excellent headed chance just before half time (we couldn’t really see it from the other end of the ground). If we had gone in one up then I feel we would have taken the 3 points. Sadly, I do not feel…[Read more]

A first point of the season, and at a venue where we have never won, but my major emotion at the final whistle was one of disappointment, one of an opportunity missed.
Undoubtedly the conditions were difficult, but we seemed to adjust to them better than the home side. Northampton have strengthened during the close season, with some big name…[Read more]

Tomorrow sees a trip to old friends Northampton. Billed by many as a match from which we need to return with something, I feel it is too early for any panic. Having watched every league game so far, I am seeing similar performances to the early part of last season, namely some good passages of play marred by sloppiness in both boxes.
Those who…[Read more]

Devon – In addition to marks from both managers I understand that there should be an independent assessor at each match. If an official consistently receives poor marks then he/she can be ‘relegated’ to a lower level league. The problem of course arises when all referees in a league are equally poor!!

Lovely piece Colum, really giving those who could make the match a sense of how it felt to be there!
I agree that Elliott was superb, it is just frustrating that he is such a curate’s egg of a player! Even amongst his awesomeness last night, he was the one who missed the easiest opportunity to score, sending a near post bullet header wide with…[Read more]
