Ken Newman writes — After the loss against Bolton things did not look rosy. We had played really well for the first 25 minutes when Barcham hit home a cracker to give us the lead. After that things went downhill. A goalmouth scramble saw the ball go through a forest of legs and Clarke, who was unsighted from the original shot, had it pass beneath…[Read more]

Self-inflicted defensive problems aside, the Dons are facing a tough initiation to League One: just look at who they have played so far — Walsall, Peterborough (LC) and Bolton Wanderers, all who have been put forward as promotion contenders this season. Tonight you can add Scunthorpe United to that list. Scunny missed out on last season’s…[Read more]

Singapore Don writes – Well, that was ultimately frustrating – again. We played so well for the first 25 minutes, and had a number of decent chances before Barcham’s goal (was it offside?!). Dean Parrett had a fantastic effort moments earlier, a pile driver of a shot after the neatest of turns – a fierce shot which their keeper did incredibly…[Read more]

Wimbledon off to Posh tonight and do not have a great record in the League Cup: lost 1st Rd Cardiff City, lost 1st Rd MK Dons, lost 1st Rd Millwall, lost 1st Rd Stevenage, lost 1st Rd Crawley Town over last five seasons in the League. Hardly inspiring, but here’s one to hang your coat on: Posh have what they see as a Tuesday night curse: In 12…[Read more]

So we set out in AFC Wimbledon’s debut season in League 1 against Walsall. A good early test for the Dons this one. Although the Saddlers have made a number of changes, they did finish one point off automatic promotion last season, so anything at the Bescot Stadium would a great start. It’s important we don’t read too much into the early results…[Read more]

Expecting Tyrone Barnett to be unveiled on Wednesday as the club’s sixth signing of the summer. Barnett’s contract was paid out by his former club Shrewsbury Town on Monday and has been signed by the Dons. Barnett is 30, 6ft 3in and has made around 218 League appearances for 56 goals. He has League 1 experience with Peterborough ( who paid Crawley…[Read more]

There has been plenty of reminiscing this past week over the Dons’ League 2 play-off final at Wembley on Monday. Memories of when Wimbledon last played at Wembley in that famous FA Cup upset over Liverpool in 1988. Just reflect on that for a moment. Twenty-eight years have elapsed and now one of our own Neal Ardley will lead out AFC Wimbledon on…[Read more]

What a thrill to watch home-grown Tom Beere slam home the winner at the second attempt deep in stoppage time to give the Dons a 1-0 advantage to take to Accrington this week. On the run of play I thought Accy were more composed and threatening than the Dons, until the final stages when the introduction of Bayo Akinfenwa turned things for…[Read more]

So Accrington Stanley stand between the Dons and a place in the Wembley play-off final. It will be a daunting task over two legs, but there are a couple of things that offer hope. The Dons won at Accy 4-3 last October and had a scoreless draw at home: so they are unbeaten against them this season! Accy will be feeling down after missing out on an…[Read more]

The Dons clinched their play-off spot with a game left on the back of a late Plymouth Argyle equaliser to kill off Cambridge’s remote mathematical bid to overhaul Wimbledon in 7th place. So now we have next weekend’s final regular season home game against Newport County to tune up for a home two-leg semi-final against either Accrington Stanley,…[Read more]

Four wins on the trot, 68 points, four points clear of the eighth-placed team, four games left with a game in hand and facing Portsmouth at home next week… it’s all for the Dons to lose to NOT make the playoffs IMHO. Momentum is a wonderful thing. Once you’ve got it you surf the wave right to the shore. A check back over the last 11 seasons of…[Read more]

I had a flick back through old Wombles Downunders, back to 2001 in fact, 15 years ago and found Trevor Pearce’s name in the contributors’ list. That’s roughly (give or take) 90-odd contributions over time to this fanzine, he’s one of our longest-serving writers. Trevor, like other WD contributors, generously give their time to help put together a…[Read more]

At 1.51pts per game I estimate the Dons could finish with 70 points if they maintain that average over the closing seven games. But will it be enough to make the playoffs? An interesting but less pressing(!) stat is that the Dons are currently 30 points ABOVE the relegation zone occupied by York City and Daggers .. just shows you how far the club…[Read more]

I’ve decided to spruce up the web-site a wee bit (even with our new logo – any comments?). Another new feature is the single thread forum, so you can jump on and have your say, ask a question or just read what is being said. As I always say the forum is only as strong as what you make of it, so I would urge you to contribute and regularly to…[Read more]
