Eleven goals from the Finland Under-21 international on loan from Brentford was a major reason why the Dons narrowly avoided relegation when the season was curtailed in March and positions were decided by the EFL on points-per-game.
Forss’s season was itself curtailed early by a hamstring injury he picked during the 2-1 loss at Portsmouth on January 11 and he was ruled out for the remainder of the season and returned to Brentford.
While he was leading the attack Wimbledon possessed a talented instinctive goalscorer, the likes of which the Dons have not possessed at this level where goals have been in short supply in their three seasons in League One.
The 21-year-old Finn’s goalscoring exploits were enough for him to be voted WDSA’s Player of the Season.
Forss polled 63 votes (including nine majors) to beat defender Terell Thomas (43/5 majors) and midfielder Callum Reilly (42/6 majors) for the WDSA award, in its 34th season.
Forss also becomes the first player on loan to win the award.
It looks as though Forss is heading for higher levels in the English game and his Brentford club are bringing him along steadily.
Kevin O’Connor, who has worked with Forss during his time as B Team head coach at the Bees said of him: “He can hold the ball up, he can spin, he’s strong and when he gets half a chance, I expect him to score. He’s clever; he aims for the defender’s legs. He shifts the ball, waits for them to shift their legs and then always shoots in between their legs so the ‘keepers can’t even react. He’s a very intelligent striker in his finishing.”
It was astute business by former manager Wally Downes to bring Forss to Kingsmeadow and it was a massive blow when injury forced the young Finn out for the season as Glyn Hodges conveyed at the time: “He was in a rich vein of form, scoring plenty of goals and enjoying his football. It has been a great deal for us and we thank Marcus and Brentford. It’s a shame that it has ended like this. We’ve done well for Marcus too and we wish him well for the future.”
