DEJI OSHILAJA is the 2017-18 WDSA Player of the Season in the closest vote in the 32 years of the award.

Oshilaja, a key member of this season’s revamped Dons squad, prevailed by just one vote from on-loan goalkeeper George Long in the WDSA poll.

The athletic central defender polled 65 votes — 10 major votes among them — to take out the 32nd WDSA POTS. Long, who greatly impressed in his season loan from Sheffield United, accumulated 64 votes, including eight major votes. Striker Lyle Taylor was third with 50 votes, including six major votes.

Oshilaja proved an influential player in the Dons struggle to avoid relegation and impressed with his last-ditch tackles to deny opposition goals.

Oshilaja has 12 months to run on his current terms and on last season’s form will be a key player for Neal Ardley to keep. Deji will wear the captain’s armband, taking over from the released Barry Fuller, indicating the belief Ardley has in him as a leader within the team.

Long came mighty close to winning last season’s WDSA award and made a huge impression in his time between the posts for the Dons. He was put on transfer by Sheffield United after the season but the Dons were never in a position to match the offers he received elsewhere and he signed with Hull City in the Championship in a three-year deal.

Taylor made it a very competitive three-way joust for the WDSA award in his last season at Kingsmeadow before switching to League One rivals Charlton Athletic.
